At Chicago Modern Therapy, we promote healing through…

Solution-Focused Therapy Approach

“Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is short-term, goal-focused, & evidence-based. [It] helps clients change by constructing solutions rather than dwelling on problems. In the most basic sense, SFBT is a hope friendly, positive emotion eliciting, future-oriented vehicle for formulating, motivating, achieving, & sustaining desired behavioral change.”

Mindfulness Based Approach

Mindfulness, from a therapeutic, secular perspective is a conscious awareness of our present moment. This includes openness and non-judgment about the experience. It is often coupled with other types of therapy, such as Cognitive-based Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

Mindfulness therapy is not concerned with relaxation, though that might be a result of certain practices. The focus is on increasing our awareness of the thoughts, feelings, and actions that hinder our progress. When we are better able to do that, we can engage with those aspects of ourselves, learn to tweak our language, and choose how to respond.”

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Approach - CBT

“Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a treatment approach that helps you recognize negative or unhelpful thought and behavior patterns. Many experts consider it to be the gold standard of psychotherapy. CBT aims to help you identify and explore the ways your emotions and thoughts can affect your actions. Once you notice these patterns, you can begin learning to reframe your thoughts in a more positive and helpful way.”

Mind-Body-Spirit Approaches

Research shows that the connection between Mind-Body-Spirit is a significant factor in the healing process and creating lasting change.

I hold firmly to this belief and work with you to develop strategies and techniques that enhance your experience of this connection.

Mind-Body approaches to therapy focus on the complex interrelationship between our thoughts, feelings, beliefs, attitudes and behavior in conjunction with our neuro-biology.

In our work together we’ll access:

  • Meditation

  • Mindfulness Techniques

  • Yoga & Breath Work

  • Relaxation

  • Guided imagery

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy — ACT

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies, together with commitment and behavior change strategies, to increase psychological flexibility. … Through metaphor, paradox, and experiential exercises clients learn how to make healthy contact with thoughts, feelings, memories, and physical sensations that have been feared and avoided … and commit to needed behavior change.”

Expressive Therapies Approach

Art therapy, facilitated by a professional art therapist, effectively supports personal and relational treatment goals as well as community concerns. …

Art therapy is used to improve cognitive and sensorimotor functions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness, cultivate emotional resilience, promote insight, enhance social skills, reduce and resolve conflicts and distress, and advance societal and ecological change.”

Internal Family Systems Therapy Approach (IFS)

Internal Family Systems is a powerfully transformative, evidence-based model of psychotherapy. [The IFS Approach works from the perspective that] the mind is naturally multiple and that is a good thing.  Our inner parts contain valuable qualities and our core Self knows how to heal, allowing us to become integrated and whole. In IFS all parts are welcome.”

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an approach to psychotherapy that identifies and addresses multiple sub-personalities or families within each person’s mental system. These sub-personalities consist of wounded parts and painful emotions such as anger and shame, and parts that try to control and protect the person from the pain of the wounded parts. The sub-personalities are often in conflict with each other and with one’s core Self, a concept that describes the confident, compassionate, whole person that is at the core of every individual. IFS focuses on healing the wounded parts and restoring mental balance and harmony by changing the dynamics that create discord among the sub-personalities and the Self.”
